Since 2010, The Texas Tribune has published information about Texas’ more than 100 prison units and the tens of thousands of people housed inside them. The data was provided by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice monthly and included breakdowns by unit, crimes, race and sex. Our site also included information on individual inmates, including their names and sentences.
As of June 2020, the Tribune retired the public-facing database. This allowed us to rethink how to best protect privacy while continuing to provide transparency on who is held in Texas prisons and why.
For those seeking information in the meantime, TDCJ publishes similar data in real time on its website and in a downloadable spreadsheet which is updated once a month.
We at the Tribune thank you for your interest in this critical information. If you have any questions about our decision to stop publishing this data, please contact prisons-feedback@texastribune.org.
