Afternoon/Evening News Editor

The Texas Tribune, the state’s go-to source for Texas politics and public policy news, is seeking an afternoon/evening news editor to join our news and general assignments team.

This editor will be primarily responsible for assigning and editing breaking news between 1 and 9 p.m. CT. Responsibilities include taking over stories handed off by dayside beat editors; assigning coverage of late-breaking stories; scheduling the home page during the evening hours and for the following morning; overseeing some enterprise stories; coordinating with other editors on coverage planning; and, when necessary, writing clean and clear copy for our site. The editor will work closely with a reporter, a photo editor and an audience team member who work the same hours.

This editor will also edit The Brief, our flagship morning newsletter, and The Blast, a thrice-weekly paid newsletter focusing on politics. The editor should be an aggressive but calm news leader who is comfortable monitoring news developments — such as court rulings, official announcements and primetime speeches — and deciding which to cover. The position requires superb communication skills and the ability to work with journalists across disciplines.

The position reports to the News Editor.

The perfect candidate for this position is unflappable in breaking news situations and excels at assigning, editing and occasionally writing breaking news stories speedily and with a sharp eye for accuracy, fairness and journalistic standards. This editor must be able to identify important stories, deploy necessary resources strategically and work seamlessly with various teams across the organization. This person should also be well-versed in AP style.

This job, which has no direct reports, is perfect for an organized utility player with strong news judgment who enjoys elevating journalism of all types and wants to take the first step toward newsroom leadership.

The salary for this position will vary depending on qualifications; the minimum is $72,000.

Responsibilities:

• Coordinate with dayside news team to ensure that stories get published promptly
• Complete editing on stories handed over from dayside editors
• Monitor late afternoon/evening news developments
• Assign coverage, in coordination with other editors
• Write and edit accurate, compelling headlines
• Monitor partner news agencies for articles that we can co-publish
• Keep the Tribune website updated
• Occasional travel and work on weekends and holidays

Qualifications:

• BA/BS degree and 3+ years of breaking news experience OR equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
• Terrific news judgment and talent for jumping on quick-turn enterprise writing
• A demonstrated ability to work quickly and under tight deadlinesImpeccable editing, reporting, fact-checking and writing skills with a strong familiarity with journalistic ethics and libel law
• Strong communication and story-telling skills using AP style
• Ability to research and fact-check information using excellent writing, reviewing, and editing skills
• Spanish-language skills are preferred

Location

The Texas Tribune office is located in downtown Austin, steps away from the Texas Capitol building. This position requires occasional in-person work in our Austin office, but can be based anywhere in the state. We have colleagues in the organization that come into the office on a regular basis and colleagues that are based in various cities throughout the United States.
