Meet our newest reporter: Kayla Guo

We’re delighted to announce that Kayla Guo, who just completed a stellar year as a Washington reporting fellow covering Congress for The New York Times, is joining our newsroom in an interim capacity. She starts remotely on June 10 and will move to Austin in early July.

From Capitol Hill, Kayla covered Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s ouster and the five-week struggle to succeed him, progressive anguish over the war in Gaza, the censures of Rashida Tlaib and Jamaal Bowman and episodic government spending battles.

She also wrote about the exodus of lawmakers from a chaotic Congress; how frontline Republicans were heading off blame for a potential shutdown; U.S. Representative Al Green’s dramatic vote to defeat House Republicans’ first attempt to impeach DHS; U.S. Senator James Lankford and the Ukraine bill's rise, fall and resurrection; and F.A.A. reauthorization.

Previously, Kayla was a transportation policy editorial intern at Politico, a part-time digital producer at The Boston Globe, and an intern at The News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C. Kayla graduated from Brown in 2022 with a degree in public policy, and served as editor in chief and president of The Brown Daily Herald, managing a staff of 275 and a nonprofit with a $150,000 annual budget.

At the Tribune, Kayla will first join the general assignment desk on the evening/afternoon shift, allowing Will Melhado to move temporarily to the dayside while Alejandro Serrano is deployed in Eagle Pass — an assignment made possible by our FRONTLINE partnership. Then, in December, she will shift over to the climate beat, filling in for Emily Foxhall when she takes an unpaid leave to take part in the 2024-25 Knight Science Journalism Fellowships.
