Groundwater Extraction Is Sinking New Orleans
Scientists are using maps produced by NASA to show how fast New Orleans and the areas surrounding it are sinking, due mostly to groundwater extraction. The increasing rate of subsidence, which they say is caused primarily by groundwater pumping and removal of surface water to prevent sogginess and standing water, is "another disaster in the making."
