While distracting noises are often unavoidable aspects of modern living, a recent study by doctors at Boys Town National Research Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, illustrates how children hear differently than adults when attempting to concentrate in a noisy environment. Tips for helping children distill necessary content and context from a clamor of noise include making eye contact, refraining from background music that includes lyrics and ensuring a speaker’s face and mouth are clearly visible.
