Texas Medical Association Flips, Endorses Republican In Galveston District

The Texas Medical Association's PAC endorsed Republican Wayne Faircloth in the House District 23 race on Monday, flipping from supporting the district's Democratic representative in 2012.

State Rep. Craig Eiland (r), D-Galveston, speaks against HB274 the lawsuit reform bill as Rep. Brandon Creighton, R-Conroe, listens on May 9, 2011.

The Texas Medical Association's PAC endorsed Republican Wayne Faircloth in the House District 23 race on Monday, flipping from supporting the district's Democratic representative in 2012.

That year, the PAC endorsed Craig Eiland, the incumbent, who went on to beat Faircloth in with 54 percent of the vote. In May 2013, Eiland became emotional on the House floor when he announced he would not run for reelection and would return to practicing law full time. Eiland had served since 1994.

Faircloth is now running against Democrat Susan Criss for the seat.

“Wayne will fight to protect Texas’ hard-fought medical liability reforms," TEXPAC Board Chair Jerry Hunsaker said in a statement. “Wayne also understands how important it is for patients to have physician-led teams to care for them. He knows only physicians can practice medicine — diagnose patients’ conditions, independently prescribe remedies, and direct patient care — and they are held accountable for that care."
