At this weekend's Online Journalism Awards ceremony in Chicago, the Tribune was honored in a big way — twice — for reporting projects in and around the 83rd legislative session.
In the "topical news" category, we won for our wall-to-wall coverage — including our middle-of-the-night livestream — of last session's abortion filibuster, the same one that catapulted state Sen. Wendy Davis, D-Fort Worth, into the national limelight and the Texas governor's race.
In the "planned news" category, we were recognized for our "31 Days, 31 Ways" project — our biennial August series that tracks legislative measures set to take effect on Sept. 1. This year it was tech-forward, with an interactive calendar and data or multimedia elements accompanying nearly every story.
We were in great award-winning company this year; other than the Trib, only the Seattle Times, ProPublica and NPR took home multiple prizes. Congrats to our fellow nominees and honorees around the country — and big ups to our friends at the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Public Integrity, which beat us out for a General Excellence award.
