With new federal nutrition standards for school snacks and lunches on the horizon, some districts that participate in the National School Lunch and Breakfast programs are crying foul. Opponents fear that the new emphasis on healthier food options will cut into school revenues, but supporters argue that child nutrition changes will cut down on students bypassing healthful options for unregulated à la carte lines and vending machines.
