In Texas, Teachers Are in Short Supply
Nearly 50 percent of first-time teachers in Texas quit the field within their first five years. The trend is leaving a gap in such important specializations as bilingual education, special education, math, science and computer science. Michael Marder, co-chairman of the University of Texas at Austin’s UTeach Natural Sciences program, says the antidote is higher pay and better benefits than are offered in the private sector.
