Israel Leads in House Election Runoff
Early voting numbers have Democrat Celia Israel with a big lead over Republican Mike VanDeWalle in the special election runoff for House District 50, according to unofficial results from the Travis County Elections Division.
Israel had almost 59 percent of ballots cast early, while VanDeWalle received about 41 percent of the vote. Early voter turnout was a meager 4.5 percent.
The seat for HD-50, which includes north Austin and part of Pflugerville, was vacated last year by Democrat Mark Strama when he took a job with Google.
