TribBlog: Straus Hires Hawkins
Former HHSC Commissioner Albert Hawkins has a new job — working for the speaker of the Texas House.
Speaker Joe Straus announced Thursday he has hired Hawkins to be his senior policy advisor, presumably overseeing health and human services and the budgetary realm.
Hawkins will be employed by Straus' political committee, Texans for Joe Straus.
"With the challenging budget situation we face during the next session of the Texas Legislature, Albert Hawkins will provide deep knowledge and invaluable perspective as members of the Texas House work to find solutions that benefit all Texans," Straus said in a statement.
Prior to heading HHSC, Hawkins was a senior White House aide to President George W. Bush for two years. From 1995 to 2000, he was the budget director for the governor's office.
