2010: Double Barrelled

Sen. John Cornyn says the only double standard that needs to be talked about is Senator Harry Reid's.

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, in the House chamber of the Texas Capitol

Sen. John Cornyn says the only double standard that needs to be talked about is Senator Harry Reid's. Texas' Jr. Senator talked about the controversy over recently published remarks by Democratic majority leader Reid today at Texas Supreme Court Justice Eva Guzman's swearing in ceremony.

Reid was quoted in a new book talking about the 2008 Presidential election saying that the country was ready to elect a light skinned African-American with no "Negro dialect." Republicans say Reid should resign his leadership post -- especially since it was Reid that went after GOP majority leader Trent Lott in 2002.  Lott resigned over comments he made about then Senator Strom Thurmond's segregationist Presidential run in the 1940's.

Democrats have fired back that some -- like Sen. Cornyn -- are calling for Reid's resignation now even though they defended Lott then.  Cornyn said this isn't about him -- it's about Reid.  He said it was Reid who called on Lott to resign -- and so Reid should do the same now.  Although Cornyn doesn't expect him to.
